Osteopathy in Brunswick
What is osteopathy?
Osteopathic philosophy
Osteopathy is a philosophy towards healing. Osteopaths see and treat their patients treat as a whole person. They understand that every person is unique, with different bodies, lifestyles and backgrounds. So when you see an osteopath, they will not only ask questions about your body but also take an active interest in you, because osteopaths know that you are not just your injury or complaint; you are a complex individual that is constantly interacting with and being affected by your environment.
Osteopathic Principles
The central principle in osteopathy is that the body has a tendency towards health. This means that under the right conditions the body can heal itself from a large variety of problems. As osteopaths we see our role as helping the body help itself. In other words, we give you the tools and understanding to help your body get back to its normal state of health, whatever that looks like for you.
An osteopathy appointment
History
In an initial appointment, an osteopath will ask you about the reason for your visit. We then will get to know you more through a conversation about your personal history, your body, how it functions and how you use it.
Examination
This will be followed by a physical examination where I watch how you move and a hands on assessment where I feel how you move. We may need to do some orthopaedic tests to see exactly where your complaint is coming from.
Diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan
Following the above, you will be given a diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan. We will decide together what this will look like for you and together agree how to get you feeling better.
Treatment
During a treatment I will apply hands-on techniques (listed below) to help your body feel better and help return it to its normal state of health. I encourage all my patients to ask why we are using certain treatments and what is happening in their bodies as we work together.
Movement advice
Movement is necessary for your body to function. Many of the complaints I see can be at least partly addressed with changes to your body’s movements. We will work together to create a movement plan, whether that be an exercise routine or just a change to your usual movement patterns.
